The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced that spring weight restriction season will begin on March 9, 2026, impacting designated Regional roads across Durham Region.
Each year, Durham Region and its local municipalities implement temporary vehicle weight restrictions during the spring thaw period to protect road infrastructure from damage. The restrictions will remain in effect until April 30, 2026, although the final date may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and periodic road assessments.
Under the weight restriction rules, vehicles weighing more than 5,000 kilograms (five tonnes) per axle are not permitted to travel on designated roads. These restrictions are enforced under the Highway Traffic Act and Regional By-law 26-2018.
Why the Restrictions Are Necessary
Spring weight restrictions are introduced to prevent structural damage to roads during the thaw cycle. As temperatures rise, frozen ground beneath road surfaces begins to soften. This temporary thaw weakens the pavement structure, reducing its ability to support heavy vehicles.
During this period, roads are particularly vulnerable to cracking, rutting, and long-term structural damage if overloaded vehicles continue regular operations. By limiting heavier vehicles, Durham Region aims to extend the lifespan of its road network and reduce costly repairs.
Where the Restrictions Apply
Weight restriction signs will be installed on all Regional roads where limits apply. Not all roads in Durham Region are affected, but drivers of commercial and heavy vehicles are urged to check whether their routes fall under the seasonal restrictions.
A complete and updated map of affected roads is available online at durham.ca/WeightRestrictions, allowing operators to plan alternate routes where necessary.
Exemptions
Certain vehicles are exempt from the seasonal weight restrictions. Most public utility vehicles and emergency service vehicles are permitted to operate without restriction to ensure critical services remain uninterrupted.
Commercial vehicle operators, contractors, and transport companies are encouraged to review the by-law details and ensure compliance during the restriction period to avoid potential fines or penalties.
Weather Dependent Timeline
Although the official restriction period runs from March 9 to April 30, Durham Region notes that the timeline may be adjusted depending on weather patterns. If spring conditions extend or shorten the thaw period, the restriction season could be modified accordingly.
Residents and business operators are encouraged to monitor official updates from Durham Region toward the end of April for confirmation of the final lifting date.
By implementing these seasonal measures, Durham Region aims to preserve infrastructure, improve road safety, and reduce long-term maintenance costs across the municipality.
