Ontario Tech University, often referred to as a “young” university, continues to rise in prominence, making notable strides in both national and international academic communities. The university was also named Research University of the Year among Canada’s undergraduate schools for the third consecutive year in 2025, an honor granted by Research Infosource. This recognition is due in part to Ontario Tech’s outstanding research environment, which played a crucial role in its high ranking in the global university report.

Dr. Les Jacobs, Ontario Tech’s Vice-President of Research and Innovation, attributes the university’s upward trajectory to strategic investments and a strong commitment to research that benefits both Canadians and the global community. Ontario Tech’s research performance is rapidly establishing it as one of Canada’s fastest-rising research powerhouses.

The university has consistently ranked high in research-related categories. In 2025, Ontario Tech University ranked #1 among undergraduate universities in Canada for research income growth, international research income growth, and university partnerships. The university also earned recognition in AI categories, including the number of AI publications, marking it as a key player in the future of technology.

Furthermore, Ontario Tech University earned a #3 seed in Ontario and was ranked #1 in Canada in two categories in the annual Maclean’s university rankings. This recognition further solidifies the university’s place as a leader in engineering and technological research in the country.

Ontario Tech has also established itself as a national clean-energy leader, making significant advances in areas such as nuclear energy, hydrogen, battery storage, electrification, wind, solar, and geothermal technologies. In addition, the university hosts Canada’s first International Atomic Energy Agency Collaborating Centre, which focuses on small modular reactors—a cutting-edge technology that aims to make nuclear energy more accessible and affordable to communities across the country. Research is also underway on nano reactors, small, portable nuclear reactors that could further revolutionize access to clean energy.

Despite being founded only in 2002, with its first cohort of students welcomed in 2003, Ontario Tech University has quickly established itself as a leading institution in Canada and beyond, demonstrating impressive growth in a short period
