The Town of Whitby has announced that the Fieldgate Sports Complex has reached significant construction milestones, with work now transitioning into the finishing phase across much of the facility. This marks an exciting step toward the completion of the multi-sport complex, which is set to serve as a key recreational hub for the community when it opens in 2026.

The Fieldgate Sports Complex has been under construction for several months, and the project team has now completed major structural work. The focus has shifted to the interior finishes, bringing the complex closer to its anticipated opening later this year. The complex will feature a variety of sports and recreation facilities that will be available to Whitby residents, providing spaces for athletic activities, community events, and family-friendly programming.

Elizabeth Roy, Mayor of Whitby, shared her excitement about the progress: “From early morning practices to first swim lessons and championship games, the Fieldgate Sports Complex will be a place where Whitby residents come together to stay active, connect, and create lasting memories. Seeing the construction reach this stage – and hearing directly from the sports groups who are excited to use the space – makes it even more real. We can’t wait to open this facility to the community later this year.”

The construction progress highlights several key achievements that bring the Fieldgate Sports Complex closer to completion:

  • Roofing and stonework: Complete, including the installation of hundreds of solar panels, which contribute to the Town’s LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building goals.

  • Arenas: 90% complete, including radiant heating built directly into the seating. Rink boards and painting are targeted for completion in May.

  • Exterior panels: 80% complete, with full completion expected in March 2026.

  • Multi-purpose gymnasium: 80% complete, with drywall and painting underway. Flooring installation is scheduled to begin in March.

  • Lobby: 70% complete, including the installation of an accessibility ramp. Drywall and painting are ongoing, and flooring is expected to be finished by May.

  • Aquatics area: Durham’s largest pool is 65% complete, with waterproofing underway and tile work set to begin in March.

“This facility has truly been built by the community, for the community to support Whitby’s growth — with inclusive, accessible, and flexible spaces that will serve residents for generations,” said Matt Gaskell, CAO of Whitby. “Thank you to the staff and project teams working hard each day to bring this vision to life. We’re nearly there and look forward to announcing an opening date in the coming months.”

The Fieldgate Sports Complex is expected to be a transformational addition to Whitby’s recreational offerings, providing a wide range of amenities for both athletes and families. As the project nears completion, the community eagerly anticipates the opportunity to use the complex, which will contribute to the town’s continued growth and development.
