Residents across Durham Region blue bin recycling programs are adjusting to Ontario’s new standardized recycling system, which has caused confusion for many households.

The province-wide program, now managed by Circular Materials, replaces local recycling rules with a single, consistent set of guidelines. This means Durham Region blue bin recycling rules now match those used across Ontario, reducing contamination and improving recycling efficiency.

Under the updated Durham Region blue bin recycling system, accepted materials include cardboard, paper products, plastic containers, metal cans, glass containers, cartons, flexible plastics, and foam packaging. All items must be empty and free of food residue before being placed in the blue bin.

Items no longer accepted in Durham Region blue bin recycling include batteries, electronics, clothing, books, hazardous waste, compostable materials, and alcoholic beverage containers.

Starting March 1, recycling collection will only include materials placed inside blue bins. Overflow items left beside bins will not be collected. Additional recycling bins will be made available to help residents manage excess recyclables.

The Ontario government says the new Durham Region blue bin recycling program shifts costs from municipalities to producers while improving recycling outcomes through consistency and accountability.
