A Clarington bank fraud investigation has resulted in nine charges against a 41-year-old Pickering man after police say someone tried to open an account using another person’s identification.

Durham Regional Police released the details October 26. Officers were called to a fraud in progress at the TD Bank at 570 Longworth Avenue on October 23, 2026.

According to investigators, a man presented identification belonging to another person and supplied false documentation while attempting to open an account. Bank employees became suspicious and contacted police.

Officers from East Division attended and determined that the identity being used was fraudulent, police said. The man was arrested without incident.

Matthew Paiva, 41, of Pickering faces one count of fraud under $5,000, one count of personation to gain advantage, three counts of uttering a forged document and four counts under the identity-document offence listed by police as procuring to be made, possessing, transferring or selling an identity document.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court. Police say Paiva was released on an undertaking. The release does not provide a court date or state that money was lost in the attempted account opening.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims connected to the Clarington bank fraud investigation. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Detective Constable Peden of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5241.
