A major development has emerged in the search for missing Oshawa pilot David Douglas after authorities located the home-built aircraft he was flying, but the 73-year-old pilot remains missing.

The Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that the aircraft was found on Wolf Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, in the Kawartha Lakes region.

The discovery comes after an extensive search operation was launched when Douglas failed to return to Oshawa following a flight Friday morning.

Despite locating the aircraft, authorities have not yet found Douglas.

Ontario Provincial Police are now handling the investigation as a missing-person case, while search-and-rescue resources are expected to continue supporting efforts to locate him.

Aircraft Located at Wolf Lake

Douglas departed Oshawa Airport at approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday in a home-built aircraft.

He was expected to return about an hour later, at approximately 9:30 a.m., but never arrived.

The aircraft was described by police as blue and yellow with the letters “FOFZ” displayed on its tail.

Search operations had previously been concentrated around the Kawartha Lakes region, particularly near Balsam Lake, based on information about the aircraft’s possible last known location.

Authorities have now confirmed that the aircraft was discovered farther north at Wolf Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park.

The discovery marks an important development in the investigation but leaves the central question of Douglas’s whereabouts unresolved.

Search for David Douglas Continues

Douglas has been described by Durham Regional Police as an experienced pilot who regularly flew north of Lake Scugog and south of the municipality of Kawartha Lakes.

Following his disappearance, a significant search-and-rescue operation was organized to locate both Douglas and his aircraft.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton led the initial operation. The centre coordinates military and civilian air and marine search-and-rescue responses and is supported by the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Coast Guard.

Earlier search efforts involved rescue aircraft and assistance from other agencies.

Locating the aircraft has now changed the nature of the operation.

According to the latest information, Ontario Provincial Police have taken over the case as a missing-person investigation, with search units continuing to provide assistance in the effort to find Douglas.

No information in the latest update indicates that Douglas has been located.

The investigation and search therefore remain active.

Earlier Search Focused Near Balsam Lake

Authorities initially believed the aircraft’s last known location was near Balsam Lake, north of Lindsay.

Douglas was reportedly flying an aircraft that was not using an active transponder signal, complicating efforts to digitally track its movements.

Search crews consequently had to rely on other information as they worked to determine the aircraft’s location.

The plane has now been found at Wolf Lake within Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park.

Authorities have not provided further details about Douglas’s whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s discovery.

Anyone with relevant information should continue to provide it to police as investigators work to determine what happened after Douglas left Oshawa Airport.

The discovery of the aircraft represents the most significant development since the missing Oshawa pilot search began, but efforts will continue until Douglas is located.
