The Whitby Public Library is hosting its first ever book sale this Saturday, June 13, with prices starting as low as 50 cents for magazines and one dollar for children’s books. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whitby Central Library branch at 405 Dundas Street West. The line-up begins outside the north-east door of the building.

This exciting event has been years in the making, said Rhonda Jessup, library CEO. This is something our community has been asking for, and we feel the time is right. This book sale will help people access affordable materials while generating support for the important work at the library.

The call for material donations went out in mid-May and the community response has been overwhelming, according to library staff. Workers have been sorting through thousands of donated books, DVDs, magazines and more that have been dropped off at all Whitby Library locations across the town.

The sale will include a wide range of titles for every age and interest, giving readers a chance to discover hidden gems and stock up on affordable reads for the summer. Pricing for individual items is straightforward and budget-friendly.

Kids books are priced at one dollar, paperbacks at two dollars, hardcovers at three dollars, magazines at 50 cents, audiobooks at two dollars and specialty items ranging from five to ten dollars. Sets such as series collections or bundled items will be priced slightly higher than individual items.

All proceeds from the book sale go directly toward supporting the extensive services and programs available at the Whitby Public Library, making every purchase a contribution to the community resource.

The library is also offering giveaways to reward shoppers. Spend five dollars and earn a sticker, 15 dollars gets a keychain, 25 dollars earns a library tote bag and spending 40 dollars will get a vintage library print. Giveaways are limited to one item per customer while supplies last.

The sale takes place in Meeting Room 1 on the main floor of the Central Library. The event accepts cash, debit and credit cards. The line-up will begin outside the north-east door of the building.

We are truly grateful for the support from our community, and we have no doubt our patrons will be delighted with what they discover at the sale, Jessup said.

For Durham Region book lovers, the inaugural Whitby Library book sale represents a unique opportunity to build a personal collection at a fraction of retail prices while supporting a vital community institution. With thousands of items sorted and ready, there should be something for everyone from casual browsers to avid collectors.

The Whitby Central Library is located at 405 Dundas Street West and is accessible by Durham Region Transit. Free parking is available on site. Given the volume of donations received, organizers are expecting a strong turnout and encourage shoppers to arrive early for the best selection.
