The Town of Whitby has officially reopened the Whitby Visitor’s Centre at 297 Front Street West, welcoming visitors back for a new season along the harbour. The reopening ceremony featured remarks from Town representatives and local guests, followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting and a walk-through of the refreshed space. The atmosphere was festive as residents and dignitaries gathered to celebrate this milestone, which promises to enhance the visitor experience in the heart of the town.
This reopening marks a significant step in the broader waterfront revitalization project currently underway in the community. The project has received support through previously committed federal funding of $200,000 from the Government of Canada, delivered through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). This funding is specifically designated to support improvements along Whitby’s waterfront. This investment is crucial for fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for Whitby residents, ensuring that the waterfront remains a central hub for activity.
Visitors to the centre this season can expect a new experience with glow-in-the-dark kayak rentals hosted by Illuminated Escapes. In addition to the recreational activities, the Visitor’s Centre itself has been refreshed to include beautiful artwork created by multidisciplinary Anishinaabe artist and Nipissing First Nation member Tessa Shank. Her work adds a layer of cultural depth to the location, honoring the heritage of the land while providing a visually stunning focal point for guests. The space is designed to encourage guests to relax and enjoy the serenity of the area.
The refreshed space also features comfortable Muskoka Chairs and bistro tables where guests can sit and appreciate the surroundings. A photo buoy, designed and fabricated by local Whitby business Grayler Metals Corp., has been installed on site as well. This unique feature allows visitors to capture memories of their visit, further integrating social interaction into the landscape design. These amenities are part of the town’s efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the waterfront location for both residents and tourists.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy highlighted the importance of the project. “Revitalizing the waterfront is a key priority in Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan, and the reopening of the Visitor Centre is an important step in bringing that vision to life. Alongside other exciting initiatives—like the restaurant and culinary hub coming to Rowe House and the popular Town Brewery pop-up at the Pumphouse—this reflects a coordinated effort to attract more residents and visitors to the waterfront and strengthen tourism in Whitby. Together, we’re creating a vibrant, welcoming waterfront that brings people together and showcases Whitby’s natural beauty,” Mayor Roy said.
Federal representatives also voiced their support for the infrastructure improvements. The Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, stated, “By enhancing public spaces, the Government of Canada is supporting communities such as Whitby to build a stronger, more resilient economy for southern Ontario.” This federal backing underscores the economic potential of investing in local public amenities.
Adding to the federal perspective, Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue and to the Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions), and Member of Parliament for Whitby, commented on the community impact. “Investing in Whitby’s waterfront is about more than infrastructure; it’s about creating vibrant, welcoming spaces where people can connect, local businesses can thrive, and communities can flourish. Through FedDev Ontario, the Government of Canada is proud to support this revitalization, highlighting all the reasons Whitby is such a wonderful place to live, work, and visit,” MP Turnbull said.
With these new amenities and strategic investments, the town aims to create a more vibrant and welcoming destination that brings people together. As the season progresses, the town anticipates a significant increase in foot traffic, bolstering local businesses and reinforcing the waterfront as a premier destination in Durham Region. The revitalization efforts are expected to strengthen local tourism and provide a lasting space for community connection along the water.
