A 64-year-old woman has died after being struck by a dump truck at a busy intersection in Ajax on Saturday afternoon, according to Durham Regional Police.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Hunt Street and Harwood Avenue South shortly before 4:00 p.m. on July 11 following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a commercial dump truck.
Police say the woman was struck as the dump truck was making a right turn from Harwood Avenue South onto Hunt Street.
Emergency Crews Responded Quickly
Paramedics, firefighters, and Durham Regional Police officers responded to the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts after arriving.
Despite extensive emergency medical treatment, the 64-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of her family.
Driver Remained at the Scene
Investigators confirmed that the driver of the dump truck remained at the scene following the collision and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
At this stage, police have not announced whether any charges have been laid.
Collision investigators continue working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
Collision Investigation Continues
Members of the Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit attended the intersection to document the scene, collect evidence, and examine factors that may have contributed to the collision.
Investigators are expected to review witness statements, surveillance video, dash camera footage, and physical evidence as part of the investigation.
The intersection remained under police investigation for several hours while officers conducted their examination.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Durham Regional Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have information that could assist investigators to contact police.
Motorists or nearby businesses with dash camera or surveillance footage recorded around the time of the collision are also encouraged to come forward.
