Oshawa Bear Spray Assault 2026: Masked Suspects Swarm Youth Basketball Group in Sudden South-End Attack
An alarming weekend swarming incident in a South Oshawa residential pocket has triggered an active investigation by regional street crime units. Investigators with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) are currently hunting for at least six young male suspects who wore full ski masks during a coordinated, unprovoked assault on Saturday evening. The group targeted local youth who were playing basketball outdoors, blinding them with a volatile chemical spray before stealing a bike and scattering into the surrounding neighborhood.
The brazen nature of the attack has prompted the Central East Criminal Investigations Branch to aggressively canvas area residents for localized surveillance feeds to identify the perpetrators.
The Cedar Street Confrontation
The violent encounter unfolded just before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, near the intersection of Cedar Street and Thomas Street—a high-density residential area in South Oshawa. A group of local youth were utilizing the neighborhood space to play basketball when they were suddenly approached by a larger, intimidating group of masked individuals.
Without any reported verbal altercation or warning, members of the incoming group brandished canisters containing a highly concentrated noxious substance, which investigators believe to be commercial bear spray or pepper spray. The suspects discharged the aerosol directly into the faces of the playing youth, causing instant incapacitation, severe respiratory distress, and chemical skin burns.
As the blinded victims scattered to escape the debilitating chemical cloud, the suspects quickly scavenged the immediate area. One of the attackers grabbed a bicycle belonging to one of the victims before the entire pack turned and fled the scene on foot, moving rapidly northbound toward the Wentworth Street East transit corridor.
Suspect Profiles and Police Appeal
Emergency medical services responded to the scene to flush the victims’ eyes and treat them for acute exposure to the noxious gas. Fortunately, no permanent physical injuries were reported, though the psychological impact of the neighborhood swarming remains significant.
DRPS patrol teams flooded the Wentworth Street area but were unable to immediately locate the fleeing group. Investigative units have released the following physical parameters for the wanted individuals:
-
The Group: Six distinct males, estimated to be between the ages of 16 and 20.
-
The Uniform: All six suspects were wearing matching dark, hooded clothing and full ski masks to completely obscure their facial features from public view.
Central East Criminal Investigations Branch detective D/Cst. Cole is leading the active case file. Police are issuing an urgent appeal to anyone living or driving through the Cedar, Thomas, or Wentworth Street grid on Saturday night to review their residential security cameras, smart doorbells, or vehicular dashcam streams. Anonymous intelligence drops can also be safely routed through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, where tipsters may be eligible for an immediate cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.
