Ajax Fire and Emergency Services is proactively reaching out to the community ahead of the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend, issuing a series of important reminders regarding fire safety and regulation compliance. With the May holiday approaching, officials are strongly asking residents to exercise caution and carefully reconsider the use of consumer fireworks or the organization of informal neighbourhood displays. The department aims to significantly reduce the number of emergency incidents typically associated with the long weekend by emphasizing prevention and strict adherence to municipal safety standards.

This formal request comes as a direct response to recurring trends observed during previous Victoria Day celebrations across Ajax. In years past, the service has responded to numerous calls related to the mishandling of pyrotechnics, which frequently lead to severe burn injuries and structural fires. Property damage is a common outcome when fireworks are used inappropriately or in unsafe environments near homes and dry vegetation. The department highlights that these incidents are not only traumatic for those directly involved but also place a significant strain on local emergency response resources during what is already a busy period for the service.

For residents who still intend to host their own displays despite the warnings, strict adherence to the Town of Ajax’s Fireworks By-law is absolutely mandatory. The regulation clearly outlines the permissible dates and times for discharging fireworks to minimize disturbance and danger. Specifically, fireworks are only permitted to be set off on May 17, 18, and 19. On these designated days, the allowed time window is strictly between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Setting off fireworks outside of these specific hours is a violation of the by-law and may result in fines or other legal enforcement actions.

Kaitlyn Moss, Public Educator with Ajax Fire and Emergency Services, provided critical context on why these regulations and warnings are so vital for community well-being. “While fireworks can be part of a celebration, they also carry significant risks when used improperly. Every year, preventable injuries and fires occur because safety precautions are overlooked,” Moss said. Her comments underscore the reality that without proper respect for the hazards involved, a festive evening can quickly turn into a tragedy requiring immediate medical or fire department intervention.

The primary message from the department is one of risk management and shared community responsibility. While the by-law provides a framework for legal use, the safest option remains avoiding personal use altogether. “We encourage residents to attend professional fireworks displays and remember that protecting people, homes and property should always come first,” Moss continued. Professional displays are conducted by trained experts who adhere to rigorous safety standards, significantly reducing the likelihood of injury or accidental fire compared to informal settings.

In addition to the by-law restrictions, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services personnel are reminding residents of basic safety protocols should they choose to proceed with a family display. Key precautions include maintaining a safe distance from buildings and combustible materials, as well as keeping a bucket of water or a hose nearby. Ensuring that fireworks are completely extinguished before disposal is another crucial step in preventing subsequent fires. The department stresses that safety is a collective effort and that neighbourly consideration, regarding noise and debris cleanup, is also a component of responsible celebration within the town.

As the long weekend begins, the service remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise within the community. However, the ultimate goal is to prevent those incidents before they start through effective public education and by-law compliance. By following these guidelines and regulations, residents can help ensure that the Victoria Day holiday remains a safe and enjoyable time for families and neighbours throughout the region.
