The Regional Municipality of Durham has issued a public advisory regarding a scheduled Ajax Water Service interruption that will affect a section of Kingston Road in the Town of Ajax. This temporary shutdown is a necessary measure to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades associated with the region’s ongoing expansion of public transit capabilities. Residents and businesses located along Kingston Road East, stretching from the intersection of Harwood Avenue to Trott Lane, are advised to prepare for the disruption.

According to the schedule released by Regional authorities, the water service will be suspended beginning on May 19 at approximately 5:00 p.m. The work is projected to continue overnight, with full service restoration expected by 8:00 a.m. on May 20. However, the Region has noted that should inclement weather conditions arise, the operation will be rescheduled to the following day. The interruption is required to allow crews to perform a complex connection to a new watermain, which is a vital component of the construction progress.

This infrastructure work supports the second segment of the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) project, specifically the corridor between Harwood Avenue and Galea Avenue. This major initiative aims to significantly enhance transit reliability and capacity across the eastern Greater Toronto Area. To safely execute the water connection, a temporary shutdown of the local supply system is unavoidable. Direct notifications are being issued to all properties that will experience a loss of water to ensure they can make necessary arrangements.

While the Region of Durham acknowledges that such interruptions can be inconvenient for residents and commercial operators, every effort is being made to complete the task efficiently. The work is managed to minimize the duration of the outage, with crews working to restore the supply immediately upon completion. Representatives from Corporate Communications emphasized that the priority remains balancing the progress of essential transit infrastructure with the daily needs of the community, adding that crews will work swiftly.

Following the restoration of water service, the Region is providing important instructions to homeowners to protect their internal plumbing systems. Residents are advised to run a cold water tap for approximately five minutes once the supply returns. This process is crucial for flushing out any sediment that may have entered the service line during the maintenance work. By allowing the cold water to run clear, residents can prevent particulate matter from entering their hot water tanks, which could potentially cause damage.

Motorists travelling through the affected area of Ajax are also being asked to remain vigilant during the construction window. The presence of heavy machinery and work crews along Kingston Road East requires drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed for the safety of all personnel involved. The Region is counting on the cooperation of the public to ensure a safe working environment while these critical upgrades to the water and transit infrastructure are carried out.

For residents seeking additional details regarding the DSBRT project or the specific construction activities, further information is available through the Region’s official website. As Durham Region continues to invest in its transportation network, projects like the watermain installation serve as foundational steps toward a more connected future. The completion of this phase will bring the region closer to realizing the full benefits of the rapid transit strategy.
