The Town of Whitby has secured more than sixty hectares of land in North Whitby for a massive future outdoor sports field complex that will dramatically expand recreational opportunities for residents and families across Durham Region. The Whitby sports fields 150 acres project is being widely hailed as a transformative and exciting step forward in meeting the rapidly growing demand for organized sports facilities in one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the entire Greater Toronto Area.
The ambitious project will take shape on a large parcel of land located on the east side of Duffs Road, north of Brawley Road in the North Whitby area of town. Once fully developed and completed over multiple phases, the sprawling site is expected to house six baseball diamonds, six soccer fields, and two full-size cricket pitches, providing much-needed playing space for athletes and sports enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels across the growing community and the broader Durham Region area.
The exciting announcement comes as the Town of Whitby continues to invest heavily in modern recreational infrastructure to serve its rapidly expanding population of residents. The new Whitby sports fields 150 acres complex will complement the highly anticipated Fieldgate Sports Complex currently under construction in Brooklin, a massive one hundred and fifty-five million dollar facility that is set to open its doors to the public later this year and will feature Durham Region’s largest swimming pool, a twin pad arena, a multi-purpose gymnasium, and numerous other state-of-the-art amenities for residents to enjoy throughout the entire year.
The outdoor portion of the impressive Fieldgate Sports Complex will feature lit pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, Whitby’s first ever multi-purpose artificial turf field, a modern skatepark, and an exciting pump track, among many other recreational amenities designed to serve the diverse interests and sporting needs of the entire community from young children to active seniors looking to stay fit and engaged.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy emphasized that the Whitby sports fields 150 acres project directly reflects the priorities that residents shared through the community strategic plan consultation process. In a video message posted on social media, the mayor noted that the development will help meet the future recreational needs of residents with more soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and cricket pitches, and stressed that ongoing input from the community will play an important role as the project moves forward through its various phases of detailed planning and eventual construction on the ground.
The town confirmed that the land will be developed through a carefully planned multi-phase, multi-year approach, with construction timing aligned with Whitby’s growth projections and municipal budget planning processes. Matt Gaskell, Whitby’s Chief Administrative Officer, stated that the town has heard clearly that demand for field sports is growing rapidly and this major project responds directly to that feedback from residents and community sports organizations across the municipality.
The comprehensive plan builds on extensive feedback gathered through Whitby’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and future public consultations with residents and community user groups will be scheduled to help refine the detailed design, specific amenities, and programming for the new Whitby sports fields 150 acres sports complex in the years ahead.
