A Whitby Snowbirds flypast is scheduled to mark the first day of school at Captain Michael VandenBos Public School on Tuesday, September 8.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are expected to pass over the Whitby elementary school at approximately 1 p.m., according to Durham Radio News. The timing may change because of weather or other operational considerations.

Residents near the Country Lane school may see or hear the aircraft as the formation approaches. The announcement should not be treated as a guaranteed performance time, and the school has not described the event as a general public air show.

A tribute connected to the school’s name

Captain Michael VandenBos Public School is named for a Whitby aviator who served with the Snowbirds. The Durham District School Board says VandenBos grew up in Whitby and pursued a childhood ambition to join the Canadian military aerobatics team.

VandenBos was killed during a training mission near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on December 10, 1998. The Royal Canadian Air Force records him as Snowbird 2, the inner right wing position, and says he was 29.

The school opened in January 2001 and has maintained a close connection with the Snowbirds. DDSB records show that the team has conducted school-opening flypasts in his memory for many years. A 2019 flypast brought together approximately 700 students, staff and community members.

The Royal Canadian Air Force lists VandenBos among the aviators honoured through Snowbirds tributes. He flew in the formation’s inner-right-wing position, a role that requires precise coordination with the team’s lead aircraft and the other pilots. Tuesday’s planned appearance continues a local remembrance that predates many of the students now attending the school.

Located at 3121 Country Lane, the school serves students from kindergarten through Grade 8 in English and French Immersion programs. The school says its identity continues to reflect VandenBos’s example and the Snowbirds’ emphasis on excellence.

What nearby residents should know

The planned September 8 pass is expected to be brief. Aircraft schedules can move with little notice, particularly when weather, airspace or operational requirements change. People hoping to see the formation from the surrounding area should keep those limits in mind.

A flypast is different from a full aerobatic demonstration. The announcement concerns an aircraft pass over the school, not a scheduled air-show routine. That distinction is important for anyone considering where to watch and how long the event may last.

Drivers should not stop on roads or enter restricted school property to watch. Families connected with the school should follow any instructions provided directly by staff, especially around arrival, dismissal and visitor access on the first day of classes.

People in the neighbourhood should also avoid using drones near the expected flight path. Drone operators are responsible for following Transport Canada rules and any airspace restrictions, and an unexpected aircraft operation is not an appropriate opportunity for close-range aerial filming.

The annual tribute links a highly visible start-of-school moment with the life of a Whitby resident remembered by both the education and military communities.
