Immanuel Christian School is seeking a way to remain at its Oshawa campus after the Durham Catholic District School Board declared the former Father Joseph Venini school property surplus.
The independent school operates at 120 Glovers Road. In responses published by Durham Post on October 21, it said the building serves about 250 elementary pupils and 30 staff and that its current lease runs to June 30, 2028.
The school said a board contact had verbally indicated the lease would be honoured through that date. That is the school’s account of discussions, not an independently reviewed lease amendment or an announcement of an immediate eviction.
An active campus, not an empty building
Immanuel Christian School’s official website lists the Glovers Road address and describes its campus. The property is therefore still used for education, although it is no longer operated as a DCDSB elementary school.
The board’s September 28 surplus decision was reported previously. The new development is the tenant school’s account of the impact, its remaining lease term and its efforts to secure a longer-term home. A surplus declaration should not be confused with a completed sale or a confirmed redevelopment.
The school told Durham Post that it has not identified a replacement property and has been exploring possibilities with real-estate professionals. It described the challenge of finding space for classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, offices and outdoor activities.
School hopes to make an offer
The school said its preferred outcome is to stay where it is. It is appealing to community supporters and local representatives and hopes to have an opportunity to make an offer on the property.
Its official Faithful 1000 campaign page confirms that it is building financial capacity toward eventual property ownership, facility planning and long-term sustainability. The page does not announce that the Glovers Road property has been purchased, that an offer has been accepted or that sufficient money has already been raised.
No sale price, purchaser, closing date or new campus was established in the material reviewed. Families should consult the school directly for operational updates rather than interpreting the property-disposition process as an immediate closure announcement.
The new information also clarifies the distinction between a building no longer needed for board programs and a vacant property: Immanuel Christian School remains an active tenant.
