Three youth are facing multiple charges following an incident involving Whitby carjacking teens who were located in a stolen vehicle and fled from police.
Durham Regional Police said officers from Central West Division were conducting proactive patrols around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, when they spotted a stolen Honda SUV near Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane in Whitby.
Police attempted to block the vehicle, but it fled the area, striking a police cruiser before crashing into a tree a short distance away. Three male suspects then fled the vehicle on foot.
With assistance from the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, K9 Unit, Tactical Support Unit and Robbery Unit, officers successfully located and arrested all three suspects.
Investigators later determined that one of the Whitby carjacking teens was responsible for a jewelry store robbery at Peoples Jewellers in the Shops at Pickering City Centre on Thursday, January 15. The same suspect is also linked to an attempted robbery at Oshawa Jewellery in the Oshawa Centre on the same day. That investigation remains ongoing.
The suspects include two 16-year-old males and one 14-year-old male, all from Whitby. Police said all three were released on undertaking.
Durham police are asking anyone with cell phone footage, dash-cam video, surveillance recordings or information related to the incident to contact the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355.
