OSHAWA — Residents across Oshawa and the surrounding Durham Region should prepare for a mix of wildfire smoke, showers, gusty winds, and possible thunderstorms on Saturday, July 18, according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency says cloudy skies will dominate the morning, bringing a 30 per cent chance of showers before conditions become more unsettled later in the day. The forecast also includes persistent smoke from ongoing wildfires in northwestern Ontario, which continues to affect air quality across much of southern Ontario.

Environment Canada has issued Orange Air Quality Warnings for several areas due to elevated smoke levels. The wildfire smoke is expected to reduce air quality throughout the day, particularly for seniors, young children, pregnant individuals, and people with respiratory or heart conditions.

Health officials advise residents to limit prolonged outdoor activities if smoke becomes noticeable. Common symptoms of smoke exposure include irritated eyes, nose and throat, headaches, and mild coughing. Anyone experiencing severe coughing, wheezing, chest pain, or difficulty breathing should seek immediate medical attention.

A southwest wind of around 20 km/h is expected during the morning, with gusts increasing to 40 km/h and potentially reaching 50 km/h during the afternoon. These stronger winds may help spread smoke across the region while also creating unstable conditions ahead of possible thunderstorms.

By the afternoon, Environment Canada forecasts a 70 per cent chance of showers along with the risk of thunderstorms moving through Oshawa and neighbouring communities. Residents planning outdoor activities are encouraged to monitor changing weather conditions and be prepared for sudden rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds.

Temperatures are expected to reach a daytime high of approximately 26°C, although humid conditions could make it feel closer to 32°C. The UV Index is forecast to reach 6, which is considered high, making sun protection important during any breaks in the cloud cover.

Saturday evening is expected to remain partly cloudy, with a 30 per cent chance of additional showers and continued smoky conditions. Winds may continue gusting up to 50 km/h, while overnight temperatures are forecast to fall to around 16°C.

Looking ahead, the forecast offers some relief. Sunday is expected to bring sunny skies, improved air quality as wildfire smoke moves out of the region, and a more comfortable daytime high of around 24°C. Overnight temperatures are expected to cool to approximately 11°C, providing a welcome break from the heat and humidity experienced earlier in the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by checking the latest Environment Canada forecasts, monitor local air quality conditions, and adjust outdoor plans if smoke or severe weather develops.
