Residents across Durham Region should prepare for a mix of heat, humidity, and the possibility of thunderstorm on Saturday, June 6, as unsettled weather moves through southern Ontario.

According to Environment Canada, the day will begin with mainly cloudy skies and a 40 per cent chance of showers across much of the region. There is also a risk of thunderstorms developing during the day, particularly as temperatures and humidity levels rise through the afternoon.

Communities including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge could experience changing weather conditions throughout Saturday. While periods of dry weather are expected, forecasters are warning residents to remain alert for rapidly developing showers and isolated thunderstorms.

The combination of warm temperatures and increasing humidity will make conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature. Daytime highs are expected to reach approximately 28°C across parts of southern Ontario, with humidex values making it feel closer to 33°C in some areas.

In addition to the risk of rain and thunderstorms, strong winds are expected to accompany the system. Wind gusts could reach between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour during the afternoon, potentially creating challenging conditions for outdoor activities and travel.

Residents planning to attend outdoor events, sports activities, festivals, or recreational programs throughout Durham Region are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely. Organizers of community events may need to adjust schedules if thunderstorms develop during peak afternoon hours.

Environment Canada advises residents to seek shelter immediately if thunderstorms approach. Lightning can strike several kilometres away from a storm, making it important to move indoors as soon as thunder is heard. Strong wind gusts may also cause loose outdoor objects to become airborne.

Despite the unsettled conditions expected on Saturday, the forecast shows significant improvement heading into the remainder of the weekend. Saturday evening is expected to become partly cloudy, although there remains a 30 per cent chance of showers during the early evening hours.

Temperatures will cool overnight, with lows falling to around 15°C. Winds are expected to gradually weaken as the evening progresses.

The weather outlook for Sunday appears much more favourable. Forecasters are predicting sunny skies across Durham Region with daytime highs reaching approximately 26°C and overnight temperatures dipping to around 13°C. Monday is also expected to remain sunny and pleasant, with temperatures near 25°C.

The improved conditions should provide ideal weather for outdoor recreation, community events, and family activities throughout the region after Saturday’s brief period of unsettled weather.

As summer weather patterns begin to take hold across Ontario, residents are encouraged to remain prepared for sudden weather changes, particularly during periods of high heat and humidity when thunderstorms can develop quickly.

For the latest forecasts, weather alerts, and storm updates, residents should continue monitoring Environment Canada forecasts throughout the weekend.
