A prank threat of a shooting at an Oshawa school has resulted in charges against a 14-year-old boy and has raised significant concerns from Durham Police about the serious consequences of such actions.

The incident occurred on February 5, when a threatening phone call was made to Harmony Heights Public School, prompting an immediate evacuation. Police responded quickly, securing the school and carrying out a search. After the threat was deemed false, the school followed a staggered release protocol to ensure student safety.

The investigation revealed that the threat came from a student at a different school. The 14-year-old was arrested and charged with uttering threats, mischief, common nuisance, conveying false information, and criminal harassment. He was released on an Undertaking.

Durham Police emphasized that while the threat was fake, the response was very real. It involved a large-scale police operation, with numerous officers, emergency units, and resources deployed. Such incidents cause unnecessary disruption, diverting attention from real emergencies and creating anxiety for students, staff, and parents.

This was the second threat to a Durham school in two weeks. The first prompted a ‘Hold and Secure’ situation at a Pickering school, where students were reportedly left unsupervised for hours.

Police also raised concerns about a growing online threat targeting youth, particularly through platforms like Discord, Snapchat, and Roblox. Investigations suggest a coordinated network of online groups, known as the ‘Com’ (short for the ‘Community’), may be influencing these incidents.

Authorities are urging parents to discuss the gravity of making false threats with their children and warned that such actions could result in criminal charges, school disciplinary action, and long-term consequences for the young offenders.
