An Oshawa vehicle fraud investigation has resulted in charges against a Toronto man after dealership staff checked a proposed purchase with the resident whose identity was allegedly being used.
Durham Regional Police said the alleged transaction developed between October 22 and October 26 at Mills Motors in Oshawa. Investigators allege the accused impersonated an Oshawa resident and used forged identification to arrange financing and purchase of a 2027 GMC Acadia Denali.
The dealership contacted the real person named in the transaction, who confirmed he was not involved, police said. The accused attended the business on October 26 to complete the purchase and collect the vehicle, and police were notified.
Central East Division officers arrested the man. Police allege he had fraudulent identification bearing the victim’s name and approximately 11 grams of fentanyl. Investigators also said he was subject to two release orders and wanted on a warrant from another police service.
Ronald Whittaker, 57, of Toronto, is charged with fraud over $5,000, personation to gain advantage, uttering a forged document, two counts of possession of an identity document, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, and possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking.
He was held for a bail hearing. These allegations have not been proven in court, and the release does not report the outcome of that hearing.
Anyone with information about the Oshawa vehicle fraud investigation is asked to contact Detective Constable Taylor of the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-579-1520, extension 5283. Durham Radio News also reported the arrest Tuesday afternoon.
