The Oshawa inaugural council meeting will welcome the public to Tribute Communities Centre on Monday, November 16, giving residents a larger venue to watch the mayor and councillors take their oaths for the 2026–2030 term.
In a November 5 announcement, the City of Oshawa said proceedings will begin at 9:30 a.m. at 99 Athol Street East. Doors will open an hour earlier, at 8:30 a.m., and visitors do not need to register or send an RSVP.
A larger setting for the swearing-in
The city says moving the ceremony to the event venue is intended to accommodate broad public attendance for the first time in its modern history. The council chamber normally has room for approximately 75 attendees; the larger space will allow more residents, friends and family members to witness the start of the council term.
The meeting also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the city-owned Tribute Communities Centre. Oshawa artist Dani Crosby has been commissioned to create an original commemorative poster reflecting shared experiences at the downtown venue over the past two decades. A limited number of free copies will be available at the meeting, according to the city.
Entry, parking and viewing options
Visitors should use Gate 1, the main entrance at Athol and Mary streets. Parking is available at Parking Garage 3 on Mary Street between King and Bond streets.
Accessible parking is on Red Tilson Lane, on the west side of the building, with access from Bruce Street. The city directs people travelling by bus to Durham Region Transit for routes and schedules.
Residents who cannot attend the Oshawa inaugural council meeting in person can watch a livestream on the city’s website. RogersTV Durham will also televise the proceedings.
Questions about accessibility accommodations can be directed to the city’s Legislative Services team through the contact information in the official notice.
