A 3.7 magnitude Orillia earthquake felt in Durham Region caused brief concern late Tuesday night, with residents in Oshawa reporting light shaking.
According to Earthquakes Canada, the earthquake occurred at 10:59 p.m. EST on January 28. The tremor was recorded at a depth of five kilometres, with the epicentre located near Orillia, Ontario.
While the earthquake was described as lightly felt, reports from Durham Region suggest noticeable movement in parts of north Oshawa, where residents said they felt vibrations and heard brief rumbling.
One Oshawa resident shared on social media that the tremor coincided with their dog reacting suddenly, prompting them to question whether an earthquake had occurred.
Earthquakes Canada confirmed there were no reports of damage or injuries, noting that impacts from a quake of this size are typically minimal.
Officials say minor earthquakes are not uncommon in Ontario and remind residents that most pose little risk.
