Residents in northern Durham Region could encounter showers and a thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon, while communities closer to Lake Ontario are expected to experience mainly sunny conditions.

The latest forecast for Northern Durham storms gives Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock a 30 per cent chance of showers late in the afternoon on July 25. Environment Canada says there is also a risk of a thunderstorm during that period.

The forecast does not currently indicate that severe thunderstorms are expected in Durham. No weather alerts were active for Uxbridge or Oshawa when Environment Canada issued its Friday afternoon updates.

Northern Durham Storms Could Develop Late Saturday

Uxbridge is expected to see a mixture of sun and cloud Saturday, with the chance of showers increasing late in the afternoon.

The daytime high should reach approximately 27 C, while the humidex could make conditions feel closer to 32. The UV index is forecast to reach nine, which Environment Canada classifies as very high.

The 30 per cent shower risk continues into Saturday evening, along with the possibility of a thunderstorm. The overnight low should fall to approximately 16 C.

Similar conditions are forecast for Port Perry and surrounding parts of Scugog. Residents should monitor the sky during the late afternoon and evening, especially when attending outdoor events, visiting beaches or travelling by boat.

Beaverton and other parts of Brock Township are also included in the northern Durham forecast area, with a 30 per cent chance of Saturday showers and a high near 27 C.

Southern Durham Expected to Stay Mainly Sunny

The Saturday forecast is different in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and southern Clarington.

Environment Canada expects mainly sunny conditions in Oshawa and Pickering, with a daytime high of approximately 27 C and a humidex near 32. The UV index is expected to reach nine.

Southern Durham has a 30 per cent chance of showers overnight, but the current local forecast does not specifically mention a daytime thunderstorm risk.

Residents should therefore avoid presenting the province-wide thunderstorm outlook as a warning for all of Durham Region.

Severe Threat Focused Farther Northwest

The strongest storms in Ontario on Friday were expected in northwestern parts of the province, where some thunderstorms could produce damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall and a tornado risk.

Durham Region was not included in that higher-risk severe-weather area.

Saturday’s broader Ontario outlook included the possibility of isolated thunderstorms in portions of southern Ontario, but Durham’s local forecasts indicate that the more immediate thunderstorm risk is limited to northern communities late in the day.

More Showers Possible Sunday

The chance of unsettled weather increases across Durham on Sunday.

Oshawa and Uxbridge both have a 40 per cent chance of showers, with highs near 27 C. Additional rain is possible Sunday night and during the first half of the coming week.

Anyone planning outdoor activities should check the latest Environment Canada forecast before leaving home. Thunderstorm conditions can develop quickly, and watches or warnings may be issued when storms become more likely or begin producing hazardous weather.

If thunder is heard, people should move into a substantial building or enclosed vehicle and remain indoors until the storm has passed.

The Northern Durham storms forecast should be updated if Environment Canada changes the precipitation risk or issues a weather alert for Uxbridge, Scugog or Brock.
