Nature enthusiasts in Durham Region will soon have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of local birdlife during an upcoming Distinguishing Ducks workshop in Scugog hosted by North Durham Nature.

The educational workshop will take place on March 7, 2026, in Port Perry, offering participants a chance to improve their ability to identify different species of waterfowl commonly found across wetlands, lakes, and waterways in the region. The event is designed to provide practical knowledge for bird watchers, photographers, and nature lovers who want to better understand the diversity of bird species living in Durham Region.

The Distinguishing Ducks workshop in Scugog will be led by experienced naturalists James and Lynda Kamstra, who are well known for their passion for birding and environmental education. During the session, they will guide participants through the key features used to identify ducks and other waterfowl species.

Attendees will learn how to recognize differences in plumage, body shape, behavior, and habitat, which are all important factors in distinguishing between similar species. The workshop will also highlight seasonal variations in appearance and migration patterns, helping participants better understand how ducks and waterfowl change throughout the year.

In addition to identification techniques, the presenters will share insights into the diverse birdlife found across Durham Region wetlands, lakes, and conservation areas. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the role these ecosystems play in supporting bird populations and maintaining environmental balance.
