Karl Subban brought lessons about reading, confidence and kindness to students at St. James Catholic School and St. Patrick Catholic School, according to a November 2 report from the Durham Catholic District School Board.
The board says the educator, author and speaker visited during the week of October 28. His presentations were tailored to younger pupils and students in the upper elementary grades.
Storytelling for younger readers
For Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, Subban shared his book The Hockey Skates. The board says the session highlighted determination, hard work and believing in oneself.
Storytelling and discussion gave students a way to explore learning and personal growth through the book.
Standing up against bullying
Students in Grades 4 to 8 took part in an anti-bullying presentation focused on recognising their influence on other people and becoming positive leaders in their school communities.
The board describes kindness, empathy and respect as central to the sessions, with students encouraged to help create welcoming environments where others feel valued and supported.
The newly published report records the school visits rather than announcing a future public appearance. It does not provide separate attendance figures for the two schools.
