Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Despite efforts by first responders, the driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver as investigators work to notify next of kin.

Two occupants travelling in the second vehicle involved in the Highway 7/12 Sunderland crash were seriously injured in the collision.

Paramedics transported both individuals to a regional trauma centre for medical treatment. Authorities have not provided details about the extent of their injuries but confirmed they required hospital care following the crash.

Police Examining Cause of Crash

Investigators with the Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the Highway 7/12 Sunderland crash.

The road was temporarily closed in the area while officers documented the scene, gathered evidence and assessed vehicle damage to determine what factors may have contributed to the head-on collision.

Police have not yet confirmed whether weather conditions, speed, driver impairment or mechanical issues played a role in the crash.

Highway 7/12 is a well-travelled route connecting several communities in Durham Region and the surrounding areas, including Sunderland and nearby rural townships.

Fatal crashes on rural highways often involve high speeds and limited visibility during early morning hours, particularly during winter and early spring conditions.

Public Asked to Assist Investigation

Investigators are now appealing to the public for assistance as they continue reviewing the Highway 7/12 Sunderland crash.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have been travelling along Highway 7/12 near Sunderland around 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning is urged to contact police.

Drivers with dashcam footage or other information that could help investigators understand what happened are also encouraged to come forward.

Witnesses can contact the Whitby Ontario Provincial Police detachment with any relevant information regarding the collision.

Ongoing Investigation

The Highway 7/12 Sunderland crash investigation remains ongoing as officers continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses.

Police say additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.

Authorities also remind drivers to exercise caution when travelling on rural highways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced and traffic conditions can change quickly.
