A 44-year-old garbage truck driver has died following a serious rollover crash on Highway 401 in Pickering, prompting a lengthy closure of the westbound collector lanes as investigators work to determine what happened.
The fatal collision occurred early Sunday morning near Whites Road in Pickering. Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports of a rollover involving a garbage truck at approximately 7 a.m. Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene and found the driver had been ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
The driver, identified as a resident of North York, was transported to hospital with critical injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead.
The collision resulted in the complete closure of the westbound collector lanes of Highway 401 near the crash site. Police advised motorists to expect significant traffic delays throughout the morning and into the afternoon as investigators conducted a detailed examination of the scene.
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed the fatality and noted that investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the rollover. At this stage, authorities have not released information regarding possible contributing factors.
