Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to lace up their boots for a Free Guided Hike in Uxbridge at Skyloft and Durham Forest on February 27, 2026.
Hosted by the Oak Ridges Trail Association (ORTA), the Free Guided Hike in Uxbridge offers both members and non-members a chance to experience some of Durham Region’s most scenic winter terrain. Covering approximately 8 to 9 kilometres over roughly 2.5 hours, the hike will move at a moderate pace and is designed for participants who are comfortable navigating hilly trails in winter conditions.
The route takes hikers through the forested Skyloft Conservation Area and the interconnected Durham Forest trail network, part of the East Duffins Headwaters system. This area is well known for its rolling hills, hardwood forests and peaceful natural surroundings. In winter, the snow-covered landscape transforms the trails into a quiet, picturesque setting ideal for outdoor recreation.
Because of current seasonal conditions, snowshoes are strongly recommended for the Free Guided Hike in Uxbridge. Organizers explain that portions of the route include groomed trails within Durham Forest. Wearing snowshoes helps pack down fresh snowfall and prevents damage to soft trail surfaces during warmer periods. Even experienced hikers are encouraged to bring snowshoes to maintain trail integrity and ensure safe footing.
Participants should arrive prepared with proper winter hiking boots, traction aids such as icers, and adequate water for the duration of the hike. Trekking poles are also recommended due to the quite hilly terrain, which can become slippery depending on snow and ice conditions. Dressing in layers is advised, allowing hikers to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the morning.
The hike is considered moderate in difficulty. Non-members and new participants are required to contact hike leader Anna Sunn by 6 p.m. the day before the event to discuss whether the hike is appropriate for their experience level. Anna can be reached by text or phone at 416-738-8916.
The group will gather at the parking lot at the end of Buzek Lane in Uxbridge. There is no parking fee at this location. Hikers are asked to arrive by 9:15 a.m. for a prompt 9:30 a.m. start.
The Free Guided Hike in Uxbridge reflects the strong outdoor culture that defines the township, often called the “Trail Capital of Canada.” Even during the winter months, local trails remain active with hikers, snowshoers and nature lovers seeking fresh air and scenic views.
Open to the community at no cost, the event offers a welcoming opportunity to connect with others while exploring Durham Region’s natural beauty. Whether you’re a seasoned winter hiker or looking to try snowshoeing for the first time, this guided outing promises an invigorating morning outdoors.
