The Fashion Rebel closing will mark the end of a 12-year run for the alternative clothing and music shop in downtown Oshawa. Its final day is Friday, October 30, according to a DurhamRegion.com interview with co-owner John Robinson.
Robinson told the newsroom that the decision was personal. Although business had declined since the pandemic, he said that was not the reason he and co-owner Poppy Valentine were closing the store.
A shop built around music and alternative fashion
The pair opened Fashion Rebel in 2014. Robinson looked after records, CDs and music memorabilia, while Valentine curated the clothing.
The store combined those interests in a compact space, offering customers a mix of music and distinctive fashion rather than a conventional chain-store selection. DurhamRegion.com described a shop with little online presence and no sign, where music and clothing displayed outside helped bring people through the door.
Robinson said the aim had been to bring alternative fashion to Oshawa and offer something for younger shoppers. Over the years, that approach attracted a loyal community of regular customers.
Co-owner ready for time away from retail
After about four decades working in retail, Robinson told the reporter he wanted time to enjoy other parts of life. His account distinguished the personal decision to step back from the broader difficulties facing downtown shops.
The Fashion Rebel closing was announced on social media during the preceding weekend, less than a week before the final day. Since then, Robinson said regulars had been visiting to share memories and say goodbye.
He and Valentine thanked the community that had supported the shop. Robinson expressed hope that another business might eventually take up the role of offering alternative fashion downtown; the report did not announce a successor.
The closing ends this particular store’s operation, not a confirmed redevelopment or a new use for the space. No replacement tenant or reopening plan was established in the reporting reviewed.
