Transit riders across Durham Region will soon pay slightly more for bus service as Durham Region Transit prepares to implement a fare increase beginning July 1. The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 adjustment will impact adult, youth, and senior riders using both PRESTO cards and cash payments throughout the region.

According to Durham Region Transit, the Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 plan is part of a long-term strategy designed to improve transit services, expand routes, and invest in major transportation infrastructure projects. Officials say the additional revenue will help support continued growth and modernization of the regional transit network.

Adult riders using PRESTO cards will see fares increase from $3.73 to $3.84 per trip. Cash fares for adults will rise by ten cents, increasing from $4.75 to $4.85. The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 initiative will also affect monthly passes, with the adult PRESTO monthly pass increasing by four dollars to $138.24.

Youth riders between the ages of 13 and 19 will also experience fare adjustments. Under the Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 changes, youth PRESTO fares will increase by ten cents to $3.46. Youth cash fares will match adult cash fares at $4.85, while monthly youth passes will rise from $107.42 to $110.59.

Senior riders aged 65 and older will see more modest increases. The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 schedule includes a seven-cent increase for senior PRESTO fares, bringing the cost to $2.46 per trip. Senior cash fares will increase by ten cents to $3.55, while senior monthly passes will rise from $53.71 to $55.30.

Transit users enrolled in the TAP monthly pass program will also be affected. The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 changes include an increase in pay-as-you-go PRESTO fares for the first 14 trips, rising from $3.73 to $3.84. TAP monthly passes will increase from $52.22 to $53.76.

Durham Region Transit says the fare adjustments are necessary to support significant investments in public transportation. Officials point to projects such as the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit initiative, expanded transit connections, and improved service reliability as key reasons behind the increase.

The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 strategy forms part of Durham Transit’s broader 10-year service and financing plan. The long-term vision aims to increase bus service levels by 127 per cent by 2032 while improving route frequency and expanding access across the region.

Transit planners also intend to explore emerging technologies and invest in modern infrastructure designed to make the system more efficient and sustainable. The Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 program is intended to help fund these future improvements while ensuring riders continue to receive reliable transportation options.

For many commuters, the increase represents a relatively small adjustment, but officials acknowledge that fare changes can impact household budgets. Durham Region Transit encourages riders to review updated fare schedules and available pass options before the changes take effect.

As July approaches, the Durham Transit Fare Increase Takes Effect July 1 announcement serves as an important reminder for riders throughout Ajax, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, and surrounding communities to prepare for the updated pricing structure.
