The Durham disability employment conference will bring employers, educators, community organizations and accessibility advocates together in Oshawa on October 16.
Durham Region is organizing the one-day event with Ontario Tech University and Ready, Willing and Able. It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Ontario Tech’s Science Building at 2000 Simcoe Street North.
Conference includes a hiring event
A hiring event for job seekers from the disability community will be part of the conference. Durham Region Employment Services and the Durham Employment and Newcomer Centre are supporting that portion of the program.
Organizers say recruiters will be seeking candidates with disabilities. The day will also include a resource village where programs, services and supports related to disability inclusion in the workforce can connect with attendees.
Keynote and panel focus on inclusive workplaces
Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai, described by the Region as the world’s first congenitally blind geneticist and a national leader in equitable employment, is scheduled to deliver the keynote.
A panel of disability and employment professionals will discuss inclusive recruitment, workplace accessibility, retention and workplace culture. The program is intended to help organizations turn accessibility commitments into practical employment practices.
