Public transit riders across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area will be able to travel for free on New Year’s Eve, with extended service designed to help revellers get home safely.

Durham Region Transit (DRT) will offer fare-free service on all routes starting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 4 a.m. on Jan. 1. The free service applies to all DRT operations, including scheduled routes, holiday service and on-demand transit.

GO Transit and the UP Express will also begin offering free rides at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. In addition, GO Transit will run extra late-night trips on several lines, including the Lakeshore East GO Train, with overnight service continuing until 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Although fares are waived, GO riders are still encouraged to tap on and off with their PRESTO cards, as no charges will be applied.

The UP Express will increase late-night frequency, with trains departing every 30 minutes after 1:15 a.m., and the final train leaving Union Station at 3:45 a.m.

In Toronto, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will also provide free service on all subways, streetcars and buses from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 8 a.m. on Jan. 1. Subway lines will operate later than usual, with most routes running until approximately 3 a.m.

Transit agencies are reminding riders to plan ahead and use public transportation as a safe alternative for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
