DCDSB Centre for Success students put public-transit and cultural learning into practice during a trip to Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market on Wednesday, October 28.
The Durham Catholic District School Board described the outing in an October 30 report. The participating students attend the Centre for Success programme at Father Donald MacLellan Catholic Secondary School.
The group travelled by GO Train, making transit part of the learning experience rather than only a way to reach the destination.
Exploring downtown Toronto
After arriving, Mr. Drake led a short walking tour near Union Station. The route included the historic VIA Rail concourse, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel and the underground PATH network.
Students photographed city life and architecture to document what they saw. At St. Lawrence Market, they had time to look around the vendors and sample treats before eating lunch at an Italian sandwich and pasta shop.
The group returned along Front Street to Union Station for the journey home.
Learning beyond the classroom
The board says the DCDSB Centre for Success outing gave students experience with public transit, city environments and cultural immersion. It credited the school’s administrators and the board for supporting the trip.
The report does not announce a new programme, enrolment opportunity or partnership. It is a newly published account of a Durham school community’s learning activity, with the local connection coming from the participating programme and students even though the destination was in Toronto.
