Canada Travel Advisory Update: New Risks in the Dominican Republic

As the summer travel season approaches, the federal government has issued updated safety warnings for several popular tourist destinations, including a significant Canada travel advisory update for the Dominican Republic. These alerts are designed to help Canadian travelers, including those from Durham Region, make informed safety decisions when visiting international locations. The current global travel climate is further complicated by rising fuel costs due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and potential jet fuel shortages in Europe, which may lead to flight cancellations in the coming months.

The most recent Canada travel advisory update highlights the Dominican Republic due to high levels of crime, particularly in major cities. While resort areas remain generally safer, police response times outside these zones are often slow. Travelers are warned about frequent petty crimes, such as bag-snatching and pickpocketing, as well as more sophisticated credit card skimming and ATM fraud. These crimes of opportunity often rise during holiday periods, with thieves targeting visible valuables and mobile phones.

In addition to the Dominican Republic, the government expanded the Canada travel advisory update to include several other popular nations:

  • Colombia: Officials report a dangerous increase in deaths related to online dating applications. Criminals use these apps to lure foreigners, who are eventually drugged with scopolamine to facilitate robbery or kidnapping. Furthermore, the country is seeing higher than expected cases of yellow fever.

  • Jamaica: While violent crime has decreased, it remains an issue in large cities like Kingston and Montego Bay. Tourists are also frequently targeted by lottery scams.

  • Brazil: High crime rates and gang violence persist in urban centers. Travelers should be wary of “arrastões”—mass robberies where groups of criminals swarm public places to snatch valuables.

  • Madagascar: The advisory cites a high crime rate and political instability, with reports of armed gangs committing home invasions and carjackings in both urban and rural areas.

The federal government monitors global events and regional trends to ensure these reports remain current. Travelers are encouraged to verify all requirements and local conditions before departure. For residents in communities like Ajax and Oshawa, staying informed through this Canada travel advisory update is a critical step in ensuring a safe and stress-free summer vacation abroad.
