A man is recovering in hospital with serious injuries after an altercation outside a Bowmanville restaurant on Friday afternoon led to a frightening incident in the parking lot that drew a significant police response from Durham Regional Police.

Durham Regional Police responded to a pedestrian-involved collision outside Montana’s restaurant on Highway 2 in Bowmanville shortly after noon on Friday. According to investigators, a Chevrolet pickup truck was parked in the restaurant lot when a man approached the vehicle and an altercation broke out between the two individuals involved.

Police say the driver of the pickup truck attempted to leave the area, but the pedestrian grabbed onto the driver side door handle and refused to let go. As the vehicle began moving away from the scene, the man lost his footing and fell in the parking lot, sustaining serious injuries in the process.

The victim was initially transported to a local hospital in the Durham Region before being transferred to a Toronto trauma centre for further treatment. Police have confirmed that his injuries are serious but non-life-threatening, and he is expected to recover from the injuries sustained in the fall.

The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene following the incident and fully cooperated with responding officers throughout the investigation. Members of the Durham Police Collision Investigation Unit were called to the restaurant parking lot to conduct a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the parking lot incident.

The collision remains under active investigation, and police are appealing to the public for any additional information or footage that could assist with their inquiry. Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have cell phone video, dash camera recordings, or surveillance footage from the area around Montana’s restaurant on Highway 2 in Bowmanville around the time of the incident on Friday afternoon.

The Bowmanville pedestrian collision has raised concerns among local residents about safety in commercial parking lots along the busy Highway 2 corridor. Montana’s restaurant, a popular dining destination in the area, was the site of the unusual incident that left one man requiring trauma care.

Anyone with information about the Bowmanville pedestrian collision is encouraged to contact Detective Constable Lan of the Durham Police Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 extension 5216. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Durham Regional Police online platforms and Durham Region Crime Stoppers.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved when disputes escalate near moving vehicles. What may begin as a verbal disagreement can quickly turn dangerous when individuals place themselves in close proximity to a vehicle attempting to depart. Bowmanville residents who frequent the Highway 2 corridor near Montana’s may have noticed police activity in the area on Friday afternoon as investigators processed the scene and gathered evidence from the parking lot.

Durham Regional Police continue to urge anyone involved in a dispute to step away from vehicles and allow parties to leave safely rather than putting themselves at risk of serious injury. De-escalation and maintaining a safe distance from moving vehicles can prevent outcomes like the one that unfolded in the Bowmanville parking lot this week.
