The Hospital Foundation in Bowmanville Ontario welcomes accelerated municipal funding after the Municipality of Clarington moved forward half of its $7.5 million pledge to support the Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment project.

The decision accelerates funding ahead of schedule and signals strong municipal confidence in one of the largest health-care infrastructure projects in Durham Region. The Bowmanville Hospital Foundation is currently leading a major fundraising effort to raise $110 million in community contributions toward the redevelopment of Lakeridge Health Bowmanville.

The project will more than double the size of the hospital, modernize patient care, and expand essential services to meet growing demand across Durham Region.

Foundation officials welcomed the early investment, describing it as a clear signal of the transformational impact the redevelopment will have on local health care. In addition to supporting construction, the foundation is also responsible for covering 100 percent of the equipment costs required for the new facility.

“This early investment from the Municipality of Clarington is a powerful demonstration of trust in the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project and a shared commitment to meeting the health care needs of a growing community,” said Maria Petri, CEO of the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation. “Receiving these funds at this stage allows the project to advance through key milestones and brings us one step closer to delivering a modern, purpose-built hospital for patients and families across Durham Region.”

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster emphasized the long-awaited progress of the redevelopment, noting that the project has been more than two decades in the making.

“I couldn’t be prouder that Clarington has stepped up to invest in our community’s health care,” Foster said. “This redevelopment is over 20 years in the making, and it’s so satisfying to see it finally moving forward. As more people choose to call Clarington home, it’s important that our local services grow with us.”

With Durham Region’s population expected to double by 2041, local health infrastructure must expand to keep pace. Officials say the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital will reduce the need for residents to travel outside the community for specialized care.

Once complete, the new hospital will feature expanded ambulatory care clinics, a Haemodialysis Centre, Level 3 Critical Care capacity, and a rooftop helipad to support rapid emergency access. The facility will be built entirely on the existing site, ensuring patient care remains uninterrupted during construction.

Laura Sciore, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, said the accelerated funding reflects strong leadership and confidence in the project’s future.

“Clarington’s decision to accelerate half of its commitment reflects strong leadership and commitment to the future of health care in our community,” Sciore said.

Community support has also played a major role in advancing the project. In 2025 alone, 58 community fundraising events raised more than $200,000 toward the redevelopment. These efforts were driven by the We Care We Can campaign, launched in 2022 as the largest fundraising initiative in the foundation’s history.

As fundraising momentum continues, the hospital foundation remains focused on delivering a modern health-care facility designed to serve Durham Region’s growing population for generations to come.
