Durham Region road spending was highlighted at the Ontario Roadbuilders’ Association (ORBA) conference, where major municipal infrastructure investments across the GTA were outlined.

During the municipal projects session in Toronto, officials confirmed that Durham Region road spending will total $146.2 million in projects targeted for tender in 2026. The region continues to prepare for significant population growth, projected to increase from over 785,000 residents today to 1.3 million by 2051.

  • $44.7 million for road rehabilitation

  • $44.5 million for growth-related road expansion

  • $23.5 million for bus rapid transit projects

  • $20.56 million for structure rehabilitation and replacement

Several carry-over projects from previous budgets are also expected to move forward in 2026, including road reconstructions, new roundabouts, bridge replacements and intersection upgrades throughout the region.

At the same conference, York Region announced a $3.3-billion 10-year road infrastructure program, while Toronto outlined a dramatic ramp-up in infrastructure spending through 2028.

Officials emphasized that Durham Region road spending is critical to managing rapid growth, improving traffic flow and maintaining infrastructure safety as the community expands.
