The Durham Indigenous Veterans Day observance will see flags at Regional Headquarters lowered to half-mast on November 8 and kept lowered until November 12, according to a new Region of Durham statement.

The November 8 notice was issued on behalf of Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry. It honours the military service and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis veterans.

Recognition and remembrance

Henry’s statement acknowledges that Indigenous veterans returned from service to injustices and barriers, and that their contributions have not always received adequate recognition.

It calls for remembrance to include learning about those experiences, respectful partnerships and continuing work toward reconciliation.

The Durham Indigenous Veterans Day announcement concerns flags at Regional Headquarters. It does not announce a new public ceremony or change the arrangements for separate municipal remembrance events.
