Ontario Tech rankings in Maclean’s 2027 university assessment place the Oshawa institution among the leading mid-sized universities for student services and research volume, according to a November 2 university announcement.
Ontario Tech says it placed first in Ontario and second nationally for student services within that group. For research volume, it reports second place in Ontario and fourth nationally.
A different comparison group
The university now has more than 15,000 students and is being assessed within Maclean’s mid-sized category under a new classification based on institutional size.
The reported positions apply to specific measures within that category. They are not a claim that Ontario Tech is Canada’s second-ranked university overall, nor are they the same as its results in international engineering or sustainability tables.
Research funding and demand grow
The university reports that sponsored research funding increased 24 per cent in 2026 to approximately $30.5 million. It also says first-year confirmations from Ontario high school students have risen nearly 50 per cent since 2021, reaching a record for the 2026–27 academic year.
Ontario Tech links its growth to expanded programmes in fields including artificial intelligence, energy and emerging technologies. Those enrolment and funding figures are attributed to the university’s announcement.
Student support remains a priority
President and Vice-Chancellor Steven Murphy said the institution’s growth reflects interest from students and partners. His statement emphasized preparing graduates for changing workplaces, research with practical applications and maintaining the student experience as the university expands.
The Ontario Tech rankings update offers Durham students and families a snapshot of specific institutional strengths alongside changes in size and research activity. Because the comparison framework has changed, the announcement should not be read as a like-for-like rise from an older ranking category.
