Ajax library resignations have brought a new development in the dispute between the public library board and town council: Piyali Correya and Rebecca McCaughey have left the board.

DurhamRegion.com reports that McCaughey submitted a resignation letter on October 5 and Correya, who had served as board chair, submitted hers on October 6. The departures happened earlier this month, not on the date of the latest reporting.

The library’s current official directory lists Pia Kaukoranta Vahabi as chair. Neither Correya nor McCaughey appears in that directory.

Trust and confidence cited

According to the newspaper’s account of their letters, both departing trustees said a breakdown in trust and confidence had left them unable to continue serving effectively.

McCaughey’s concerns involved most council members and certain town staff. Correya linked her decision to the conditions she considered necessary for independent judgment and effective governance.

Those are the trustees’ stated reasons. They are not findings by a court or another adjudicator about the conduct of council, library staff or board members.

Departures follow earlier governance decisions

The Ajax library resignations follow months of disagreement over appointments and oversight. In May, council voted to revoke Correya’s trustee appointment. The board subsequently continued recognizing her as chair after a July special meeting.

The town disputed the board’s authority to take that step. The disagreement was followed in September by a change to the process used to recommend future library trustees to council.

All About Durham previously reported on the reinstatement dispute and the recruitment change. The resignations are a separate development: two members have now left, and the official directory identifies the board’s current chair.

Current leadership confirmed by library

DurhamRegion.com reports that Kaukoranta Vahabi thanked the departing members for their service and contributions. The library’s own board page independently confirms her leadership role; the resignation dates and reasons remain attributed to the newspaper’s reporting on the letters.

The reports do not establish a court ruling resolving the earlier disagreement. The departures should not be read as a legal determination favouring either council’s position or the former trustees’ position.
