Ajax Affordability: Mayoral Candidates Compare Plans

Ajax affordability proposals range from property-tax restraint and new housing to school meals and transit assistance, according to a new questionnaire answered by four of the town’s five mayoral candidates.

DurhamRegion.com published the candidates’ written responses on October 21, ahead of the October 26 municipal election. Each was asked what actions they would take to reduce residents’ cost-of-living pressures, with a 125-word response limit. Vian Persad did not respond.

The answers are campaign commitments, not approved budgets or new services. Several concern responsibilities shared with Durham Region, school boards or other governments; the questionnaire does not establish that a mayor could implement them alone.

Crawford and Fenn connect housing with local finances

Marilyn Crawford said she would keep municipal taxes responsible while maintaining services and supporting a wider mix of affordable, attainable and family housing. Her answer also calls for provincial and federal infrastructure and housing investment that would reduce pressure on local taxpayers.

Crawford proposed meeting residents six weeks before a budget is posted. She linked household affordability to financial management and a stronger local economy, rather than giving a specific new tax rate.

Carion Fenn also emphasized housing supply and infrastructure for responsible growth. She proposed reviewing municipal spending and service efficiency, while attracting investment and jobs that residents could reach closer to home.

Fenn cited her community food-distribution work as experience informing that approach. That account is part of her candidate response; it is not a newly verified municipal spending or food-program total.

Hinds proposes school meals and transit relief

Richard Hinds promised a property-tax cut, a free school-lunch program and free transit for seniors and students travelling to and from school. He said casino revenue and reductions in spending would fund his proposals.

The response did not include a detailed implementation budget, an agreed arrangement with schools or a decision by the regional transit authority. Residents should distinguish the proposed benefits from services already available.

Khan promises a two-year tax freeze

Ashmeed Khan proposed no property-tax increases during his first two years, followed by increases no higher than inflation. He also called for a spending review and improvements in service efficiency.

His housing proposals include affordable rentals and development aligned with community needs. He said he would support local businesses, seek sustainable employment, reduce red tape and review fees for possible relief for seniors and vulnerable residents.

The different Ajax affordability approaches give voters a comparison of intended priorities, but the questionnaire does not independently cost the promises. A candidate’s non-response should not be interpreted as the absence of a position; voters can consult candidates directly for further details.

Ajax’s official election website confirms that internet and telephone voting is open until 8 p.m. on October 26. Instructions are included in voter information letters, and the town lists assistance options on its election website.
