Ajax Kingston Road restrictions are expanding at four intersections as Durham Region moves ahead with centre-median station construction for the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit project.
A regional construction update describes additional lane reductions, lane shifts and changes to traffic signals along the corridor between Rotherglen Road and Galea Drive. Some isolated work areas will be reduced to one lane.
The affected intersections are Kingston Road at Westney Road, Chapman Drive/Ritchie Avenue, Harwood Avenue and Salem Road. Motorists should watch the arrangement at each location rather than assume the same lane pattern applies throughout the corridor.
Signal changes accompany median work
The Region says the restrictions are required to accommodate construction of bus rapid transit stations in the road’s centre median. Changes to signal timing include offset left-turn lanes and fully protected left-turn signals intended to improve safety around the works.
The latest notice concerns active traffic arrangements at these intersections. All About Durham previously reported on the broader Ajax BRT construction program and planned fall lane reductions; the new update identifies the current intersection controls and the transition towards permanent lane configurations.
Work continues into late spring 2027
According to the regional notice, the work covered by this update will continue until late spring 2027, when permanent lane configurations are expected to be put in place. Unfavourable weather may affect the schedule.
That timing applies to this construction update and should not be read as confirmation that the entire Durham-Scarborough BRT corridor will open next spring.
Durham Radio News reported on October 20 that buses, stops, sidewalks and businesses will remain open during regular operating hours during construction. Travellers should still follow temporary signs and check current transit notices for individual boarding arrangements.
The Region is asking drivers to use caution around pedestrians, cyclists and construction crews. Its TrafficWatch service provides current construction and traffic information, while its construction-and-business information page offers guidance for affected businesses.
The project receives partial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. Residents travelling through the Ajax Kingston Road restrictions should allow for changing lanes and intersection controls as crews complete the median work.
