Clarington Inclusion: Mayoral Candidates Discuss Hate

Clarington inclusion and the response to hate are part of the municipal election discussion, with mayoral candidates Tom Dingwall and incumbent Adrian Foster outlining how they would help residents feel welcome and safe.

Their responses were published in an October 19 DurhamRegion.com election report asking how they would welcome diverse populations as Clarington grows. Both described a municipality that should belong to everyone, while placing different emphasis on the role of political leadership and public debate.

The report follows community conversations about online hostility and misinformation. The candidates’ statements are campaign positions, not newly adopted municipal policies or findings about particular residents.

Dingwall emphasizes dialogue and fair treatment

Dingwall told the newspaper that most residents treat their neighbours with dignity and respect regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or background. He said discrimination should be taken seriously, while arguing that racism is not uniquely prevalent in Clarington compared with other municipalities.

He also expressed concern that political rhetoric and inflammatory allegations had contributed to division. His proposed response centres on direct engagement, opportunities for residents to be heard and respectful public discussion.

Dingwall said he had met with the local imam and representatives of diverse community organizations. He described those relationships as a foundation for continuing dialogue if elected mayor.

His response framed municipal leadership as a responsibility to act fairly, reject discrimination and restore constructive discussion. Those are his stated commitments; the newspaper’s questionnaire does not establish a new program, budget or implementation timetable.

Foster stresses speaking against racism

Foster said council has a responsibility to ensure residents feel welcome, respected and safe, including speaking up when people are targeted because of their identity or background.

He argued that racism is a real experience for those affected, rather than simply an allegation. He also pointed to councillors, municipal staff and community leaders who have worked to bring people together around an explicit rejection of hate.

The incumbent’s response emphasizes the value of publicly condemning racism and defending residents who feel targeted. He described that position as consistent with the views of the vast majority of people who call Clarington home.

The two responses provide voters with a comparison of how the candidates describe the issue. They do not amount to a joint platform, and neither should be presented as an election result or a council decision.

Community conversation provides local context

The municipality’s own September 25 account confirms that residents gathered at Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville for a community conversation on September 23.

Clarington hosted the gathering with Durham Region, Victim Services of Durham Region and Clarington Library, Museums and Archives. The municipal report described discussions about recognizing hate, distinguishing hate incidents from hate crimes, addressing misinformation and maintaining respectful conversations across different viewpoints.

That earlier gathering is background to the current election reporting, rather than a newly announced event. The fresh development is the candidates’ published responses on inclusion ahead of the October 26 election.

For residents weighing Clarington inclusion alongside other municipal issues, the statements show different approaches to the same responsibility: how local leadership can support a growing community in which neighbours feel they belong.
