Ontario Car Insurance Costs Hit Young Drivers Hard

Young motorists preparing to drive to college, university or work this fall could face a significant financial burden as Ontario car insurance for young drivers remains considerably more expensive than coverage for older and more experienced motorists.

An analysis from insurance comparison platform Ratehub.ca shows just how dramatically age can affect premiums.

According to the analysis, an 18-year-old male driver in Toronto could pay approximately $10,792 per year for car insurance. By comparison, a 24-year-old male driver in the same postal code could face an annual premium of about $6,077.

The estimates are similarly high for young women. Ratehub.ca reported that an 18-year-old female driver in Toronto could pay around $10,128 annually, compared with approximately $6,247 at age 24.

Those figures demonstrate why young Ontario motorists may want to carefully compare their options before choosing an insurance provider, purchasing a vehicle or reducing coverage simply to lower their monthly expenses.

Why Young Ontario Drivers Pay More

Age isn’t the only consideration used when determining an insurance premium.

Young and newly licensed drivers generally have less experience behind the wheel, which can result in insurers assessing them as a higher risk. Accident history and overall claims data can also contribute to higher rates for younger motorists.

Other factors can make a substantial difference.

A driver’s postal code, driving history and choice of vehicle can all influence how much an insurance company charges.

That means two drivers of the same age could receive very different quotes depending on where they live, what they drive and their individual records.

Choose Your Vehicle Carefully

One important strategy for reducing Ontario car insurance for young drivers is considering insurance costs before buying a vehicle.

Rather than purchasing a car first and searching for coverage afterward, young motorists can identify several potential vehicles and obtain insurance estimates for each one.

The difference can be substantial.

More expensive, powerful or higher-end vehicles may carry significantly higher premiums. Insurance costs should therefore be considered alongside the purchase price, fuel consumption, maintenance expenses and financing costs when deciding whether a vehicle is affordable.

Shopping around among insurance providers or speaking with a broker may also uncover significant differences between available premiums.

Maintaining a Clean Driving Record Matters

A clean driving record can be particularly important for younger motorists.

Speeding tickets, at-fault collisions and other driving violations can increase insurance premiums. Because young drivers already tend to pay higher rates, even one infraction could make an expensive policy more difficult to afford.

Following traffic laws and developing safe driving habits can therefore have both safety and long-term financial benefits.

Should Young Drivers Stay on Their Parents’ Policy?

For some families, adding a young motorist to an existing household insurance policy may provide savings.

Whether that’s possible depends partly on the number of vehicles and drivers in the household and how those vehicles are used.

Staying with the same insurer as parents may also provide access to multi-vehicle or home-and-auto discounts.

However, the parents’ existing insurer won’t necessarily provide the lowest rate for the younger driver. Comparing quotes remains important before making a decision.

Driver Training Could Reduce Insurance Costs

Completing a Ministry of Transportation-accredited driver training program is another potential way for newly licensed drivers to reduce premiums.

Ratehub.ca’s Morgan Roberts explained that insurers may use experience ratings when calculating premiums.

A new motorist who has completed recognized driver training may receive a more favourable starting rating than someone who hasn’t completed an accredited program.

Over time, maintaining a clean driving history can further improve that rating and potentially contribute to lower premiums.

Telematics Could Provide Additional Savings

Some insurance companies also offer discounts to motorists who agree to participate in telematics programs.

These programs generally use a smartphone application or other technology to monitor certain driving behaviours, such as speeding, hard braking and cellphone use behind the wheel.

According to Roberts, motorists participating in telematics programs can often receive savings of around 10 per cent, with the possibility of further adjustments at renewal depending on the driving behaviour recorded.

Young motorists considering these programs should understand how their insurer collects and uses driving information before enrolling.

Cutting Coverage Isn’t Always the Best Solution

High premiums may tempt young motorists to eliminate optional protections to save money.

However, Roberts cautioned against dropping certain optional coverage solely for relatively small annual savings. Removing coverage could leave a driver responsible for significantly greater expenses following an accident or other loss.

A recent TD Insurance survey found 55 per cent of Generation Z Canadians would consider reducing insurance coverage to save money, highlighting the pressure younger Canadians are experiencing.

Instead, motorists may benefit from comparing insurers, choosing vehicles with lower insurance costs, completing accredited driver education, maintaining clean driving records and exploring eligible discounts.

For students and other young motorists across Durham Region and the rest of Ontario, considering insurance expenses before purchasing a vehicle could help prevent an unpleasant financial surprise later.
