The Beaverton bridge replacement project is moving into construction as Durham Region begins work on a permanent crossing over the Beaver River in Brock Township.

The Beaver River Bridge carries Regional Road 15 across the river east of Beaverton and serves as an important connection to the community’s downtown, businesses and emergency services.

Ontario is providing up to $16.6 million toward work associated with the temporary and permanent bridge replacement, while Durham Region is overseeing and administering the project.

The permanent bridge is expected to be completed in 2027.

Bridge originally closed in 2023

The original Beaver River Bridge was closed on November 16, 2023, after safety concerns prompted an emergency shutdown.

Because of the importance of the crossing to Beaverton residents, businesses and emergency services, Durham Region moved quickly to establish a temporary connection.

A modular temporary bridge opened to traffic on November 14, 2024.

The temporary structure can accommodate full traffic loads and does not have a posted weight restriction beyond normal provincial vehicle weight and dimension requirements.

Permanent bridge construction now underway

Durham Region says the new bridge will be constructed in stages to limit disruptions.

Traffic will remain on the temporary bridge while crews construct the northern portion of the permanent structure.

Once that section is ready, traffic will shift onto the new bridge. The temporary bridge will then be removed so crews can complete the remaining portion of the permanent crossing.

The staged approach is intended to maintain two-way traffic for most of the construction period.

Short road closures may still be required for specific construction activities or traffic shifts.

Lower speed limit remains in effect

Drivers travelling through the Beaverton bridge replacement construction area should expect lane shifts and reduced speeds.

A temporary 40 km/h speed limit remains in place through the bridge site and east of the Highway 12 intersection.

Durham Region says the lower limit will remain until construction is completed.

Once the permanent bridge opens in 2027, the speed limit is expected to return to 60 km/h.

Motorists are being asked to slow down, follow construction signage and watch for workers and equipment.

Province provides project funding

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is funding the bridge project, while Durham Region manages construction and project oversight.

Earlier regional information said provincial support of up to $16.6 million would cover costs associated with both the temporary bridge and the permanent replacement.

Brock officials have emphasized the importance of the provincial and regional partnership, noting that losing the crossing for an extended period would have created significant transportation and economic challenges for Beaverton.

The route provides access not only for residents and businesses but also for emergency vehicles travelling through the area.

Replacement expected in 2027

Durham Region’s official project page lists construction beginning in 2026 with anticipated completion in 2027.

The temporary bridge will remain an important part of the traffic plan until enough of the permanent structure is ready to carry vehicles.

The Beaverton bridge replacement is intended to restore a long-term, reliable connection across the Beaver River while minimizing disruptions during construction.

Residents and drivers can follow project updates through Durham Region’s Beaver River Bridge project page as work continues.
