Drivers travelling through north Ajax should prepare for changing road closures on Church Street North as construction continues throughout the summer.

The Ajax Church Street closure is scheduled to remain in effect until September 15 while crews build municipal and regional infrastructure in the area.

The work is being completed in two stages, meaning the section closed to through traffic will shift as the project progresses. Local residents will continue to have access to properties within the construction area.

Ajax Church Street Closure Begins With Stage One

The first stage began on June 15 and is expected to last approximately eight weeks.

During Stage 1, the first 515 metres of Church Street North immediately north of the Hurst Drive and Caton Lane area are closed to through traffic.

Drivers who do not need to access homes inside the construction zone should avoid the closed section and use surrounding arterial roads.

The closure is intended to provide crews with enough space to safely complete infrastructure work while limiting public traffic through the active construction area.

Construction schedules can change because of weather, site conditions or delays involving materials and utility work. The Town’s project listing identifies September 15 as the estimated completion date.

Second Closure Section Will Follow

After the initial eight-week construction period, crews are expected to move into Stage 2.

The second stage is scheduled to last approximately five weeks and will affect the remaining 255 metres of Church Street North.

That closure will extend toward the area immediately south of the southern driveway serving Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens.

The changing closure means drivers who have become familiar with the first-stage barricades should continue watching for updated signs and detour instructions as work progresses.

Motorists should not assume that a section open during Stage 1 will remain available during Stage 2.

Access Maintained for Local Residents

Residents living within the construction area will continue to have access to their properties.

The affected neighbourhood can be approached through Taunton Road West, Westney Road North and Rossland Road West.

Drivers should expect slower travel near the construction limits, particularly during busy morning and afternoon periods. Temporary signs, equipment deliveries and construction vehicles may also affect traffic movement.

Only residents, authorized visitors and other local traffic should enter the closed section when access is permitted. Drivers using Church Street North as a through route should follow the posted detours.

Emergency services have been informed about the construction activity and planned road closures.

Pedestrians and cyclists should also follow all posted instructions and avoid entering areas separated by barricades or construction fencing.

Drivers Should Check Closure Stage

The Ajax Church Street closure is expected to continue through most of the summer, but its exact location will change when the project advances to the second stage.

Residents should check the Town of Ajax construction map and public notices before travelling through the area. The Town maintains an online list of active and upcoming construction projects, road closures and municipal notices.

Businesses, residents and visitors should allow additional travel time and follow temporary parking or access restrictions near the work zone.

Construction timelines are estimates and may be extended if crews encounter unexpected underground conditions or weather interruptions.

The current project schedule calls for the Church Street North work to be completed by September 15.

This article should be updated when the Town confirms that Stage 2 has begun or announces that Church Street North has fully reopened.
