The City of Oshawa and Oshawa Fire Services (OFS) have officially transitioned to Next Generation 911 (NG911), introducing a modernized emergency communications system designed to improve response times and enhance public safety.

The upgraded service officially launched on Sunday, marking an important milestone in Canada’s nationwide rollout of the new emergency network.

Despite the technological improvements, city officials emphasize that there is no change to how residents contact emergency services. Anyone experiencing an emergency should continue to dial 911 exactly as they do today.

Modernizing Canada’s Emergency Response System

The transition to Next Generation 911 is part of a nationwide initiative mandated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to modernize Canada’s emergency communications infrastructure.

All emergency service providers across Canada are required to transition to the new network before the March 2027 national implementation deadline.

The upgraded system replaces aging emergency communication technology with a more advanced and reliable network capable of supporting new digital features while improving coordination between emergency dispatchers and first responders.

Key Benefits of NG911

According to the City of Oshawa, the new emergency communications system offers several important improvements that will strengthen public safety throughout the community.

Among the key enhancements are:

  • Faster connections to emergency dispatch services.
  • Increased system capacity to manage periods of high call volume while maintaining reliability.
  • Improved coordination between dispatchers and first responders, helping emergency crews reach incidents more quickly.
  • Enhanced caller location accuracy, allowing dispatchers to identify emergency locations with greater precision.
  • Smarter call routing technology that directs calls more efficiently to the appropriate emergency service.

As the national rollout continues, NG911 will also support additional capabilities, including real-time text messaging, geospatial call routing, and Z-axis location technology, which can help identify a caller’s vertical location within multi-storey buildings.

Faster, More Accurate Emergency Response

Oshawa Fire Chief Stephen Barkwell said the new system provides dispatchers and emergency crews with better tools to respond more effectively during critical situations.

He noted that improved location information and enhanced situational awareness will allow dispatchers to send help faster while improving overall emergency response throughout the community.

Mayor Dan Carter also welcomed the transition, describing NG911 as an important investment in public safety.

He said the upgraded emergency communications system represents a major advancement in how emergency calls are received and managed, helping provide quicker and more dependable assistance when residents need it most.

Provincial Investment Supports Transition

The Province of Ontario has provided $6.7 million since 2022 to help support Oshawa Fire Services’ transition to the Next Generation 911 network.

The funding has assisted with upgrading equipment, infrastructure, and emergency communications technology required to meet the national rollout schedule.

The implementation of NG911 places Oshawa among the growing number of Canadian municipalities adopting the next generation of emergency communications technology before the nationwide deadline.

City officials encourage residents to remember that while the technology behind emergency services has changed significantly, the process for requesting emergency assistance remains simple—call 911 whenever immediate police, fire, or medical assistance is required.
