A Pickering man is facing multiple serious charges after a Durham Regional Police investigation into the alleged trafficking of a woman in the sex trade.
The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Human Trafficking Unit launched the investigation earlier this year after receiving information that a woman was allegedly being exploited through human trafficking activities in Durham Region.
According to police, investigators gathered evidence indicating that the suspect allegedly recruited and facilitated the victim’s involvement in the sex trade while also exercising control over various aspects of her life. Police further allege the victim was assaulted and that the suspect controlled her finances, actions that investigators say are commonly associated with human trafficking offences.
Following several months of investigation, officers concluded the case on Thursday, July 3, when they arrested Jameel Winston Snipe-Daring, 28, of Pickering.
Snipe-Daring has been charged with several offences, including:
- Trafficking in Persons
- Trafficking in Persons by Exercising Control
- Procuring
- Receiving a Financial Benefit from the Sexual Services of a Person Over 18
- Assault
Following his arrest, the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Durham Regional Police say the investigation remains active and investigators are concerned there could be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Police are encouraging anyone with information related to this investigation, or anyone who believes they may have been victimized, to contact the DRPS Human Trafficking Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5600.
Human trafficking remains one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada, with victims often experiencing physical violence, emotional abuse, financial control, coercion, manipulation, and threats. Law enforcement agencies continue working with community organizations to identify victims, investigate offenders, and provide support services to survivors.
To assist those affected, Durham Region has established a network of organizations that provide specialized services for survivors of human trafficking. Support is available through Stop Human Trafficking Durham at www.stopht.com, where individuals can access information about safety planning, housing, counselling, legal resources, and other community services.
In addition, Victim Services of Durham Region offers free and confidential support to victims without judgment. The organization provides crisis intervention, emotional support, referrals, and assistance navigating available resources for those impacted by crime.
Police emphasize that victims of human trafficking are never responsible for the crimes committed against them and encourage anyone in need of assistance to seek help through available support organizations.
Anyone wishing to provide information anonymously can contact Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online. Information leading to an arrest may qualify for a cash reward.
As with all criminal proceedings, the charges against the accused have not been proven in court. Jameel Winston Snipe-Daring is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation remains ongoing.
