Whitby Winter Parking Restricts Overnight Street Parking

Whitby winter parking restrictions are now in effect, prohibiting parking on local streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 1 through April 15.

The Town’s seasonal rules are intended to keep roads available for snow clearing and other winter maintenance. DurhamRegion.com issued a reminder on November 4, and the hours and dates are confirmed on Whitby’s official parking webpage.

Snow events can affect parking at any hour

Residents should not assume that moving a vehicle after the overnight restriction ends makes on-street parking acceptable during a storm. Parking that interferes with snow clearing is prohibited, and the Town asks drivers to move vehicles off the road during winter snow events.

Vehicles left on the street can prevent crews from clearing the full roadway. The Town says drivers may receive a parking ticket when their vehicle obstructs snow-removal work.

Temporary permits have limits

Whitby offers a free short-term on-street parking permit program for residents who need relief from the usual three-hour limit or the winter overnight restriction. The Town says applicants must first create an account and provide vehicle information as proof of residence.

Initial registration can take up to five days to process. Permits can be issued after an account has been approved, so residents should plan ahead rather than rely on an immediate exemption.

Importantly, all parking exemptions are cancelled during winter weather events requiring townwide road plowing or salting. Vehicles must then be moved so crews can clear the roads safely, regardless of the time of day.

Residents can review the current restrictions and registration instructions through the Town’s parking pages. The rules are separate from other signed parking limits, which continue to apply.
