Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy is urging residents to avoid touching any dead or sick birds after eight dead geese were discovered near Port Whitby Marina earlier this week.
According to the mayor, Whitby Animal Services is working with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative to have the birds sent for testing. At this time, the cause of death has not been confirmed.
“Animal Services is continuing to monitor the waterfront and nearby areas for any other birds that may be sick or in distress,” Roy said.
Residents who encounter a sick or dead bird are asked to report it to Whitby Animal Services at 905-655-0283, including the exact location so staff can respond promptly.
As a precaution, residents are advised not to touch or attempt to assist birds and to keep pets on a leash to prevent contact.
The dead geese were found near Port Whitby Marina on Monday, January 12, according to Central Lake Ontario Conservation.
